Be Well Employee Wellness Program

One of our five universal goals within the Medicine Hat Public School Division is to foster a culture of 
wellness
. We understand that a healthy school community is one that supports the wellness of all of its members (students, teachers, staff, and parents) and strives to be a healthy setting for living, learning, and working. To support this goal, our division has created an employee wellness program which is accessible to ALL staff employed in our division

Our Mandate

The ​Be Well Employee Wellness ​Committee, made up of Wellness Champions, collaborates to administer the wellness program and aims to ensure the health and wellness needs and goals of staff are being met. This includes:

  • identifying the initiatives and strategies needed to achieve staff health and wellness goals;
  • coordinate the engagement and implementation of health and wellness initiatives across the school division; 
  • identify potential barriers and propose strategies to improve participation in the wellness program; and
  • review progress and results to evaluate program effectiveness

Wellness Champions

A Wellness Champion has been identified from each location in our division. Their role is to support and share the plan created by the Wellness Committee. Their responsibilities include:
  • updating and maintaining Employee Health and Wellness boards;
  • be a champion for the Wellness Program (role model enthusiasm with the intent to inspire involvement of others);
  • obtain information and feedback from colleagues and bring it forward to the Wellness Committee;
  • present at staff meetings on topics of workplace wellness; and
  • attend Wellness Champion meetings throughout the school year for planning. 

Wellness Committee Principles

The following principles guide the Wellness Committee in its decision-making as it plans the health and wellness initiatives for staff: 
  • commitment to share ideas and collaborate in learning;
  • communication is multifaceted and transparent;
  • ensures program participation is voluntary;
  • creating an inclusive program that reaches all employees in our school division;
  • commitment to make the program easily accessible;
  • focus a long-term view and commitment to health and wellness in effort to support the division's ability to self-sustain a focus on healthy people, healthy workplaces; and
  • celebrate successes.

WellAhead Research Project

The Medicine Hat Public School Division is participating in a national research project focused on improving teacher and staff wellness in school divisions across Canada. This project is supported through WellAhead and will run from 2019-21. 

WellAhead is a McConnell Foundation initiative focused on integrating social and emotional wellbeing into K-12 education. They believe that a whole-school approach to wellbeing requires a focus not only on students, but on the educators and staff that surround them. WellAhead aims to improve workplace wellbeing in K-12 education by: 

     ● Getting broader buy-in on the importance and benefits of teacher, staff and principal wellbeing 
     ● Increasing our evidence base on how to mitigate the root causes of stress in the school setting 
     ● Mobilizing knowledge to leaders and decision-makers on how they can effectively improve workplace wellbeing 
     ● Aligning the interests of multiple stakeholders to take collective action across Canada

Individual participation in this project is OPTIONAL. The goals of the study are to:

     ● Increase principal, teacher and non-teaching staff wellbeing 
     ● Reduce stress related to workload 
     ● Increase whole-school satisfaction and wellbeing
