FAQs
Who can participate in Work Experience?
Any student in Grade 10, 11, or 12 who has a job can participate in the Work Experience program.
Students completing Grade 9 who plan to attend CHHS, MHHS, or The Hub for Grade 10 can register starting July 1 after completing Grade 9.
What are the advantages of being in Work Experience?
Work Experience lets you turn your job into an opportunity to earn high school credits while building skills for your future. You can earn up to 30 credits toward your high school diploma, qualify for the Work Experience Cord at graduation, and gain valuable skills that will last a lifetime.
You can keep working without changing your school timetable, build your resume and portfolio with real work experience and positive employer evaluations, and gain confidence in the workplace. Plus, participating students are covered by WCB insurance through Alberta Education.
How Do I Earn Credits?
Students can earn 3 to 30 high school credits through Work Experience. Credits are based on the hours you work, with 1 credit earned for every 25 hours worked. For example, working 125 hours earns you 5 credits.
You can start with as little as 75 hours of work, which earns 3 credits. Evaluation forms must be completed before credits can be awarded.
Is there a time limit of when the credits must be completed?
No. There is no set time limit. Everyone’s work schedule is different, so students earn their Work Experience credits at their own pace.
For example, a student working 10 hours a week could earn 10 credits in about 6–7 months. Another student might earn the same number of credits faster or take a little longer. The important thing is to keep working and submitting your hours as you go.
Can I use more than one job for Work Experience?
Yes! You can use experience from multiple jobs to earn Work Experience credits. Trying different types of work can help you build a wider range of skills and work toward earning the maximum of 30 credits. You can also count hours from two jobs at the same time, as long as you have a separate Work Agreement in place for each job.
Can I use a job in the summer for Work Experience?
Absolutely! You can use a summer job to earn Work Experience credits during the summer after Grades 9, 10, or 11, and even after Grade 12 if you want to finish earning credits. Just make sure your Work Agreement is completed, signed, and submitted to the Work Experience office in June, before you start your summer job.
Can volunteer work be considered Work Experience?
Yes! Volunteer work can count toward Work Experience credits, using the same criteria as paid employment. You can even combine volunteer hours with hours from a paid job. Just make sure your volunteer organization has a regular supervisor who can sign your timesheets and complete your required evaluation forms.
Please note not all jobs qualify for Work Experience credits. The following types of work are not approved: babysitting or nannying, newspaper or flyer delivery, and food delivery services such as pizza delivery or SkipTheDishes. If you’re unsure whether your job qualifies, check with a Work Experience Coordinator before getting started!
