In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day, Medicine Hat Public School Division is honoured to welcome back Jason Chamakese as part of our First Nations, Métis and Inuit speaker series. Previously visiting MHPSD in 2023 as a presenter at the first annual Kiskihkeyimowin event, it is a pleasure to have Jason return to share his music, language, and stories with students and staff.

Jason Chamakese is a Plains Cree musician and storyteller from Pelican Lake First Nation in Saskatchewan. A fluent Plains Cree speaker, he uses music, particularly the flute, as a way to share culture, teachings, and personal experiences. Since beginning his musical journey in 1998, Jason has released two albums of original flute compositions.

A recognized artist, Jason has received multiple award nominations and was the 2011 recipient of Best Traditional Flute CD at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. He has performed across North America and internationally, including at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival.

In addition to his music, Jason supports Cree-language visibility as a panelist and translator on APTN’s Hometown Hockey, and is a graduate of University nuhelot’įne thaiyots’į nistameyimâkanak Blue Quills, where he studied Cree.
