Student Career Opportunities
Do you want your child to learn about how to launch their future career, gain extra credits, get signed up for work experience or even get a head start on their post-secondary studies? There are many new opportunities available to high school students that we want to share with you.
Grade 9 students can start earning high school credits in the summer before grade 10! Here is a sneak peek of what is available to this year’s grade 9’s (who are going into grade 10 in Sept 2024):
- Is your child interested in working with their hands, building houses or furniture? Our new Intro to Construction Trades class gets students working with real trades people, with the potential to be chosen for an internship. This new and unique opportunity is made possible thanks to a partnership with BILD Medicine Hat Association.
- Students can earn cash and credits at the same time through Work Experience: Students with a summer/part time job can earn high school credits. If you take the HCS 3000 course (1 credit) you can earn high school credits for your work.
- Interested in the diverse and fast-growing area of the economy in agriculture? Our Green Certificate program may be just what you need to get started.
Students can get a taste of college while still in high school through our dual credit pathways. We have a limited number of Dual Credit Scholarships available for multi course, blended programs that allow hands on learning while in high school.
- Intro to the Trades – Medicine Hat College/MHPSD This program lets you earn both high school and college credits while learning valuable skills at MHC. In person labs will run one Friday per month (Sept-April) as well as online learning requirements. Space is limited, early applications are strongly encouraged.
- Thinking about a career in healthcare? Starting in grade 11, our Health Care Aide Certification Program lets you complete the Medicine Hat College program for free while still in high school. This opportunity includes having your college tuition paid by MHPSD in the year following high school graduation in order to complete the program.
- Love Animals? Become a Veterinary Technical Assistant through Olds College an industry leader in the field. This amazing program lets you earn college credits and even walk the graduation stage at Olds in the spring – tuition paid! This program focuses on helping cats and dogs, and could lead to a job at a shelter or clinic. Check out veterinarian technician salary on indeed.com to see how much these professionals make.
